In the United States, neglect or abuse were widespread throughout orphanages and orphaned children living in these institutions were not properly cared for. Orphanages became known for their discriminatory practices and unhealthy living conditions. In most cases, children who were orphaned and living in these institutions were not provided with access to the psychological, emotional, and physical care that they needed. The orphanages were generally underfunded and understaffed. The food was often inadequate and many children were malnourished.
